There were big smiles and plenty of goodwill at the 2016 Beach Day Out on the Capricorn Coast, held on 16 September at Emu Park.

Now in its fifth year, Beach Day Out is held during Disability Action Week and is an opportunity for all community members to come together for a day of fun and learning.

CentacareCQ were platinum sponsors at this year’s event and Jenny Sweeny, CentacareCQ Disability Support Coordinator, worked as a member of the Beach Day Out Steering Committee to help bring it all together.

Ms Sweeney said the event was getting bigger and better every year, with plenty of community support behind it.

“From a relatively small event five years ago, Beach Day Out in 2016 had 62 stalls and thousands of attendees.

“Stall holders included a diversity of local businesses and organisations offering disability and family services, and a range of entertainers and special guests helped to create a fantastic atmosphere.

“We also had more than 100 volunteers helping in a variety of ways, including local school students.”

One very special guest on the day was Karni Liddell, Paralympics swimming competitor and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) QLD Ambassador.

Ms Liddell spoke to the crowd about the NDIS, which is currently being rolled out across Queensland, and how it will change the way in which disability services are funded and delivered.

“People with a disability, their families and carers will be empowered to choose the types of supports and services they need,” Ms Liddell said.

“The NDIS will provide people with the right equipment and services to be able to get out their front doors in the morning to be able to work, play, study and contribute to society.”

Ms Sweeney said after a great day supported by the whole community, plans were already underway for next year’s Beach Day Out.
