Bishop Michael McCarthy, the 10th Bishop of Rockhampton, and the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton joyously welcome the announcement that Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Danny Meagher as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton.

Bishop Danny is currently serving as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Born in West Wyalong, New South Wales, Bishop Danny was educated by the Jesuit Fathers at St Ignatius College, Riverview before studying economics and law at Sydney University.
After working for three years as a solicitor, Bishop Danny entered St Patrick’s Seminary in Sydney and was ordained a priest on 22 July 1995. He served in many Sydney Parishes and has also served as Director of Catechesis for World Youth Day, Director of Mission for CatholicCare, Director of Formation for the Permanent Diaconate, Administrator of the Cathedral at Broken Hill and Rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary. Bishop Danny was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Sydney on 8 December 2021.
In these roles, Bishop Danny has shown himself to be a person of deep faith and a pastoral leader who cares for his community with love and compassion. His personal and priestly gifts will stand him in good stead as he takes up his role as Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton.
Bishop Danny said he was humbled to be appointed by Pope Leo XIV as Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton, and he looked forward to faithfully serving the people of the Diocese as their Bishop.
“For the past 12 years, Bishop Michael McCarthy has been a much-loved pastoral leader who served the people of the Diocese, with wisdom, care, and compassion. As Bishop, I will do my best to carry forward the great work of Bishop Michael and I look forward to working closely with him during this time of transition.” Bishop Danny said.
Bishop Michael said he was delighted that Bishop Danny would be installed as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton.
“I know Bishop Danny to be a man of faith and a man of integrity who has the pastoral and administrative skills to lead the people of the Diocese and our Catholic Ministries into a hope-filled and exciting future.” Bishop Michael said.
“I thank God for the blessings bestowed upon me during my time as Bishop and I pray that Bishop Danny will be likewise blessed in abundance as he serves the people of the Diocese of Rockhampton.” Bishop Michael added.
Bishop Danny will be installed as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton, on Thursday 28 May 2026 at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Rockhampton.
