Members of CatholicCare’s Yeppoon and Rockhampton Community Care teams recently participated in a training workshop titled ‘Supporting People Living with Dementia’.
Developed and delivered by our Dementia Education Facilitator, Rachael Belot, the full-day workshop aimed to build and expand our team’s knowledge, skills, and confidence in supporting people living with dementia and their carers, while strengthening our commitment to delivering quality, person-centred care that promotes dignity, respect, and independence.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive discussions and hands-on activities designed to demystify dementia. They explored a range of key topics, including:
- The types, symptoms, and stages of dementia
- Identifying signs of carer stress
- Applying healthy lifestyle interventions
- Recognising and responding to behavioural and sensory changes
- Encouraging meaningful engagement
- Awareness of aids, home modifications, and elder abuse prevention
In addition to building foundational knowledge, participants also gained valuable insight into CatholicCare’s Dementia Together program, our inclusive wellness and education retreat for people with early-stage dementia and their carer.
At the end of the workshop, participants each received a certificate recognising their commitment to learning and dedication to advancing dementia care across Central Queensland.
This valuable learning opportunity deepened participants’ understanding of dementia and strengthened their ability to deliver informed, compassionate service.
With these new insights, our team are now better equipped to continue to support clients and families to live well at home for as long as possible.
