A special visit: The Apostolic Nuncio’s afternoon at CatholicCare

What a memorable May afternoon!

Recently we were delighted and honoured to welcome the Apostolic Nuncio to Australia, His Excellency Archbishop Charles Balvo and Bishop Michael McCarthy to our CatholicCare office in Rockhampton. His Excellency’s visit coincided with local celebrations in honour of the ten-year anniversary of Bishop Michael’s ordination as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton.

During a guided tour of our Bolsover Street offices led by our Executive Director, Robert Sims, and General Manager for People and Culture, Anna Morris, Archbishop Charles and Bishop Michael met with Jo, Karen, Kylie and Shelley from our Social Services team to learn about the variety of programs we deliver in the social service space, including our new counselling program, Care to You, that takes counselling services directly to eligible people in their residence.

Archbishop Charles learned about the wide variety of services and programs available from Social Services team members, Karen (left) and Jo (right).

The tour then moved on to meet Angel from our Court Support team, where Angel explained our Court Support Navigator program that works with domestic violence victim survivors navigating the criminal justice system. Archbishop Charles was particularly interested in how the team undertake their work and how service users are supported during such a confronting time.

The success of our Court Support Navigator pilot program was shared with Archbishop Charles by Court Support Team Leader, Angel.

Meeting with Shayley from our Client Contact team (CCT), Archbishop Charles and Bishop Michael learned more about the role of the CCT at CatholicCare, which includes the huge task of answering our phone calls, general enquiry emails, webchats and Facebook messages. Archbishop Charles asked questions about the technology we use, our data screens on display to the team, and how the team manages to take phone calls effectively in such a fast paced and often loud environment.

Client Contact Team Leader, Shayley, speaking with Archbishop Charles about the technology our Client Contact team use to manage our busy contact centre.

The final tour stop was in meeting with Michelle from our Care Management team. Michelle spoke about the wide variety of government subsidised programs that people can explore to access our care services at low or no cost. It was especially insightful to hear Bishop Michael share his thoughts on the amount of change he has personally witnessed within CatholicCare over the past 10 years, including our name change from CentacareCQ and our move to incorporation.

Care Management Team Leader, Michelle, outlined the variety of government subsidised programs that people can explore to access our care services.

Finishing the afternoon with tea, coffee and a meet-and-greet with members of our executive team and members of our council, it was a privilege to welcome Archbishop Charles, and to showcase our mission in action by sharing first-hand the impact our programs and services have on the people we serve.
