The Australian Government is launching AusAlert, a new national warning system designed to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices during disasters and major emergencies.

This may include emergencies such as bushfires, severe weather and public health emergencies.

Before AusAlert launches in October 2026, the system needs to be tested across Australia.

When is the national test?

The AusAlert national test will take place on Monday 27 July 2026.

In Queensland, the test is expected at around 2:00 pm AEST.

What will happen during the test?

During the test, compatible mobile phones, smart watches and some tablets may:

  • vibrate
  • make a loud siren-like sound for about 10 seconds
  • turn the screen on automatically

This may happen even if your device is on silent or do not disturb.

The test message should clearly say that it is a test. You do not need to do anything when you receive it.

Why some people may need to plan ahead

For most people, the AusAlert test will simply be loud and unexpected.

For some people, the alert may create a safety risk. This is especially important for people who use a hidden or safety device, including people experiencing domestic and family violence.

An alert could make a hidden device easier to find.

If receiving the AusAlert national test may not be safe for you or someone you care about, the official advice is to turn the device off or switch it to aeroplane mode at least one hour before the test, and leave it off for 24 hours.
